“Biofeedback and Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy” at the Hellenic Society of Colorectal Surgery Conference

Foteini Lagari, MA, PT, Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist and co-founder of PT PRAXIS®, spoke at the 9th Panhellenic Conference of the Hellenic Society of Colorectal Surgery, during the Round Table on the Management of Defecation Disorders.

As a Pelvic Floor physiotherapist with ongoing education and decades of experience in the impact of Pelvic Floor dysfunction, Ms. Lagari discussed the role of physiotherapy in the rehabilitation of bowel dysfunctions as a conservative treatment option – emphasizing the proper use of biofeedback for the same purpose.

In her presentation, Ms. Lagari addressed constipation and its connection to Pelvic Floor dysfunction, analysing the anatomy of the Pelvic Floor (PF), the functional mechanism of defecation, and how it relates to Defecation Disorder Syndrome (Obstructed Defecation Syndrome). After covering the functional and anatomical causes, she focused on Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy, highlighting the International Guidelines of the World Physiotherapy Organization. According to these guidelines, Pelvic Floor physiotherapy contributes to pelvic and women’s health, improving, among other conditions, bowel dysfunction (rectal and anal), which can result from gynaecological, urological, and gastroenterological disorders.

Her presentation included an in-depth discussion on the physiotherapeutic assessment of Pelvic Floor “health,” involving a detailed medical history, palpation of the abdominal area, perineum, anal sphincter, and puborectalis muscle, as well as the planning of an individualized treatment approach.

Ms. Lagari emphasized the necessity of a multidisciplinary approach for the effective management of Pelvic Floor dysfunctions, advocating physiotherapy as a conservative treatment choice. She also stressed the importance of lifestyle modifications, behavioral therapies, and other techniques that retrain the Pelvic Floor muscles, including Biofeedback – Biological Feedback.

Concluding her presentation, Ms. Lagari presented representative case studies of obstructed defecation syndrome and detailed the physiotherapeutic approach used for their treatment.
