Speech by Mimi Marcellou at the European Parliament: “Empowering Women – A Holistic Approach to Health and Well-Being”

Mimi Marcellou, Vice President of Europa Donna Hellas, PhD(c), MSc, PT, and Specialised Physiotherapist in Musculoskeletal Disorders & Pelvic Floor Therapy, focused on “Sexual Health and Well-Being of Women Post-Survivorship,” a topic that remains largely undiscussed by the majority of women and their healthcare providers.

This critical issue has been the focus of Mimi Marcellou’s academic and professional work for many years, particularly her efforts in applying physiotherapeutic approaches to address the genitourinary syndrome of menopause in women diagnosed with breast cancer. She highlighted the therapeutic benefits of pelvic floor physiotherapy, which enables women to reclaim their sexual lives through scientific support and proper care tailored to the female body. She emphasized that survivorship should be accompanied by joy and pleasure after cancer, as the journey of recovery goes beyond medical treatments. She stressed that mental health and well-being are intrinsically linked to a woman’s sexual health and are foundational to the healing process.

“A holistic approach to the sexual health and well-being of women post-survivorship,” she said, “requires addressing both physical and mental health, necessitating collaboration between healthcare professionals, mental health experts, support networks, and society. Together, we can ensure that every woman, after survivorship, can embrace her sexual health with confidence, reclaim control of her life, and ultimately achieve her well-being.”Τέλος φόρμας
