Prevention of Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause

How can we prevent Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause?

It is a fact that the oncologist’s primary priority, along with their multidisciplinary team, is the effective treatment of a life-threatening malignant tumor in the breast or female reproductive organs. The oncologist determines the course of treatment, which may include the induction of early menopause if the patient is still menstruating.

The Effects of Early Menopause or Genitourinary Syndrome

The consequences of early menopause are well known to doctors, nurses, psychologists, and the entire multidisciplinary team supporting the patient. However, these effects are often underestimated, despite the certainty that they will affect the woman both during and after treatment, preventing her from enjoying life as she did before cancer.

Among the symptoms of Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM) are:

  • Recurring urinary tract infections
  • Urgency and frequent urination
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Pain during urination
  • Vaginal dryness, hypersensitivity, and irritation
  • Reduced lubrication
  • Inability to achieve orgasm or decreased libido
  • Pain during sex (dyspareunia)

Can We Prevent It?

The answer is yes. Women should be clearly informed about the consequences of menstruation cessation and, in collaboration with a Pelvic Floor physiotherapist, start an appropriate preventive therapeutic protocol to avoid these painful and distressing symptoms.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy approaches prevention holistically, incorporating: breathing techniques and mindful relaxation exercises, specialized Pelvic Floor exercises, Pelvic Floor muscle re-education using vaginal dilators and a structured routine including vaginal moisturizers and lubricants

Women who discover Pelvic Floor physiotherapy often ask,
“Why did no one tell me about this before?”
This question highlights the urgent need to educate all healthcare professionals involved in breast and gynecological cancer treatment.

At PT PRAXIS® we inform women with Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause about why it happens and how they can manage it.
