October, International Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention Month Sexual dysfunctions faced by women after breast cancer and how to address them Research on the sexual health of women who have survived breast cancer highlights what is already known: the insufficient training of healthcare professionals within multidisciplinary teams and the resulting lack of proper information provided to women on an issue that directly concerns them. Why is recent research on sexual dysfunction in breast cancer survivors so important? “The UK’s National Health System (NHS), from the end of World War II until today, has been a model focused on prevention. The fact that such a large percentage of women who survived breast cancer (73%) received no information from their multidisciplinary care team about the impact of treatment on their sexual health clearly shows the urgent need for education – first for professionals and, of course, for women themselves – on sexual dysfunction. Equally significant is the dissatisfaction expressed by participants regarding how specialists addressed their sexual dysfunctions, with one in two women stating they were very dissatisfied not only with the management but also with the information they received,” explains Mimi Marcellou, PT, MSc, PhD(c), a physiotherapist specializing in pelvic floor...

This August, take time to understand Pelvic Floor Dysfunction and adopt five simple tips to support your pelvic health. The pelvic floor – our “well-known unknown” – supports the reproductive organs, bladder, and rectum. When it malfunctions, it can lead to a range of serious issues such as incontinence, pain, and organ prolapse. What is the pelvic floor? The pelvic floor sits at the base of the pelvis, a bony structure at the bottom of the spine. It spans from the pubic bone at the front to the sacrum and coccyx at the back, and extends side to side between the two sitting bones. It consists of a thin layer of muscles and connective tissue that supports and protects: In women: the uterus, vagina, bladder, urethra, and rectum In men: the bladder and bowel When does pelvic floor dysfunction occur? Pelvic floor dysfunction occurs when the muscles are either weak or overactive (too tight). What causes weak pelvic floor muscles? Lack of exercise is a key factor. As physiotherapist specializing in the rehabilitation of pelvic floor dysfunctions, Mimi Marcellou, PT, MSc, PhD(c) explains, pelvic floor muscles are like any other muscles in the body – they require regular and progressively...

Or how to stay strong after menopause Understand the symptoms, recognize the need for prevention, and take action early. Mobility is closely linked to aging. After the age of 50, both men and women experience reduced flexibility, decreased muscle strength, and lower bone density. These changes affect balance, movement, and can lead to musculoskeletal pain or fractures, with or without clear cause. Reduced mobility can also trigger further health issues, such as weight gain, inactivity, and related diseases. Menopause can accelerate this decline, especially without consistent, long-term exercise. However, awareness of its effects can – and should – motivate us to adopt daily habits that support bone and muscle health. Effects of menopause on musculoskeletal health Menopausal musculoskeletal syndrome may include: Musculoskeletal and joint pain Loss of muscle mass and bone density (increased fracture risk) Higher risk of tendon and ligament injuries Worsening of osteoarthritis Adhesive capsulitis (“frozen shoulder”) These effects are largely due to the decline in estradiol, a key form of estrogen produced by the ovaries, which plays a vital role not only in reproduction and sexual function but also in maintaining bones, muscles, tendons, cartilage, ligaments, and fat balance. Five key changes caused by reduced estradiol Increased...

The article “As the Bicycle Turns: Cycling and the Pelvic Floor” from the Pelvic Health and Rehabilitation Center explores how cycling can negatively affect pelvic floor health, especially in individuals with pre-existing dysfunctions. Key points: Pelvic floor pressure: Sitting on a bicycle can compress the ischial tuberosities and the pudendal neurovascular bundle, reducing blood flow and causing irritation or pain. Saddle design: Different saddle shapes influence blood circulation and comfort. Studies have shown that even well-designed saddles can reduce genital oxygenation by 20% within 20 minutes. Body position: A low handlebar position and prolonged static posture without changes increase pressure on the pelvic floor and may contribute to dysfunctions. Individual differences: Tolerance to cycling varies depending on body structure, weight distribution, and personal exercise history. Recommendations: If you experience symptoms such as pain, numbness, or discomfort in the pelvic area during cycling, it’s important to consult a specialized pelvic floor physical therapist. Choosing the right saddle, adjusting your bike properly, and taking movement breaks while cycling can help minimize symptoms. You can read the full article here: pelvicpainrehab.com
